What is AAU?
AAU is one of the largest, non-profit, volunteer, sports organizations in the United States. It was founded in 1888 "to establish standards and uniformity in amateur sport". In 1996, the AAU joined Walt Disney World and relocated its national headquarters to Orlando, Florida. More than 40 AAU national events will be conducted at the new Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando.
Every year AAU has regional (state), and national AAU tournaments.
Club Mission:
The Charlevoix Northern Lakers AAU club has been formed to provide Charlevoix girls and boys with above average basketball skills, a chance to play on a team with other competitive players, and against other competitive teams. We do not recruit outside of Charlevoix, unless a team needs more players to complete its roster. We are members of the national AAU and Michigan AAU organizations.
Goals are:
1. Teach fundamental basketball skills.
2. Practice and play as much as possible between December and spring-time to develop these skills (within the reasonable time constraints of family, school, church, etc) .
3. Prepare the players to play at the next level.
4. Attempt to teach game concepts and an understanding of the important details of the game, beyond the fundamental skills.
5. Participate in a tournament(s) and scrimmages with other AAU teams.
6. Conduct ourselves in a positive, team-oriented, family-oriented manner, with good sportsmanship and fair play.
7. Respect our opponents and the officials.
8. Have FUN!!!
AAU practices and games will usually be on weekends. AAU comes secondary to family, church and school events. But players should try to make it to as many practices as possible. Fundamentals, team play, and very importantly, a positive mental attitude will be stressed.

The AAU Athletes' Code of Honor
"I promise upon my word of honor that I will not take unfair advantage of an opponent, that I will be courteous in word and demeanor to opponents, officials and spectators, that I will observe the rules of the game in spirit as well as in letter, and that I will constantly strive to uphold the ethics of amateur sports."
The AAU Coaches/Volunteers' Code of Honor
"I promise upon my word of honor to help to create an environment in which primary emphasis is placed upon the emotional and physical well-being of all AAU athletes, rather than winning. I will lead, by example, and will demonstrate the value of fair play and sportsmanship to all participants. Lastly, by becoming an AAU member, I agree to be bound by the AAU Code as well as all AAU operating procedures and policies. "
